You’re probably coming here with an idea of what a brand is... and there’s a good chance that idea is wrong.

And it’s not your fault! I get it, most of us think brand and imagine a really great logo, some perfectly picked colors, and just-right fonts. Design stuff.

But the truth is, branding isn't really about design.
It's about human beings.

Every Brand Is Trying To Create A Connection

Bear with me on this, because it’s really good.

Think about a business you love.
A business you recommend without being asked.

You probably aren't loyal to them because of their logo, you're loyal because of how they make you feel.

 

  • You trust them.

  • You understand them.

  • You believe they'll deliver on their promises.

 

And that feeling… that's branding.

Not the logo.    Not the color palette.

 

The feeling.   The relationship.   The trust.
And every decision inside of that business that contributed to that feeling, that relationship, and that trust, THAT is branding.

Branding Is Human, here’s how:

At its core, every business is simply one or more human beings on the inside of something trying to connect with other human beings on the outside of that something. That's it.

Think of it this way: A business owner creates a product, service, experience, or solution because they believe it can improve someone's life.

 

Then they have figure out how to communicate that value clearly enough that another human being understands it, trusts it, and chooses it.

 

Everything inside a brand exists to support that connection.

 

  • The messaging.

  • The pricing.

  • The customer experience.

  • The sales process.

  • The social media content.

  • The design.

 

Every single piece is communicating something.

Because the people who are considering paying you are asking themselves all kinds of questions:

 

  • Can they trust you?

  • Do you understand their needs?

  • Are you confident you can help them?

  • Do they trust you with their precious investment of time, money, energy?

  • Do they feel safe saying yes to you?

 

Then they have figure out how to communicate that value clearly enough that another human being understands it, trusts it, and chooses it.

 

Those questions aren’t logical, they’re emotional.

That’s Why Two Businesses Can Sell The Same Thing And Feel Completely Different

Think about it: 

 

Two businesses can offer nearly identical products or services.

 

They can solve the exact same problem. They can serve the exact same audience. 

 

And yet people will have completely different emotional reactions to them.

 

  • One feels welcoming. One doesn’t.

  • One feels luxurious. One feels practical.

  • One feels like a risky investment. One feels safe.

And those feelings don't happen by accident, they're the result of thousands of decisions being made over time.

Decisions about language. Design. Experiences. Values. Priorities. Positioning.
Every decision communicates something, and they all combine to create a feeling in the mind of the customer.


That's how a brand is created. Ultimately it’s a collection of decisions, being made by human beings, that create an emotional reaction in their prospective customers (aka other human beings).

And The Big Companies Know It!

Large corporations spend millions of dollars researching human behavior.

 

  • They study psychology, consumer habits, buying patterns, emotional triggers, customer experiences.

  • They understand that people don't make decisions based purely on logic.

  • They understand that trust matters.

  • That familiarity matters.

  • That emotional connection matters.

  • That people choose the brands that feel aligned with who they are and how they want to experience the world.

 

Those big businesses know that branding isn't a logo.
But as small business owners, we're taught that branding is just visual.

 

Just the stuff on the surface: A logo.  Fonts.  Colors.

 

And while those things do matter, they're only the visible tip of the iceberg.

 

People Don't Buy Because They Like Your Logo
People buy because they trust you.

 

They buy because they understand what you do.
Because they believe you can help.

A beautiful logo without trust is decoration.

Because branding isn't about convincing people, it's about helping the right people recognize themselves in what you're building.

So What Is A Brand?

A brand is the emotional experience people have of your business. 

 

It's the feeling people carry with them after they interact with you.

 

It's the story they tell themselves about whether or not they trust you.

  • Your logo supports that.

  • Your messaging supports that.

  • Your design supports that.

 

But none of those things are the brand.

 

The brand is the connection they feel with you.
And that connection starts with your identity.

 

Because before your audience can understand who you are, you have to understand who you are.
Before your messaging can be clear, your identity has to be clear.
Before your design can communicate something meaningful, there has to be clarity around what that meaning is.
